A School for the Neighbourhood
Qamaruddin Khan opened this school twenty years ago to teach the children of his own neighbourhood. When he started, the fee was ₹20 a month — later ₹100 — because the families here could not have sent their children to school otherwise. The fee has grown with the school, to ₹300 today. What has not changed is who this school is for: children whose parents never had the chance to study, and who deserve every chance to choose a different life.
कमरुद्दीन खान ने बीस साल पहले अपने ही मोहल्ले के बच्चों को पढ़ाने के लिए यह स्कूल शुरू किया था। शुरुआत में फीस ₹20 प्रति माह थी — बाद में ₹100 — क्योंकि यहाँ के परिवार इसके बिना अपने बच्चों को स्कूल नहीं भेज पाते। स्कूल के साथ फीस भी बढ़ी है, आज ₹300। जो नहीं बदला है वह यह है कि यह स्कूल किसके लिए है: वे बच्चे जिनके माता-पिता को पढ़ने का मौका कभी नहीं मिला, और जो अपने लिए एक अलग जीवन चुनने के हर मौके के हकदार हैं।

Twenty years ago, this street had very few children who went to school at all. Qamaruddin Khan believed that did not have to be the limit of what a child from here could become. He did not open a school to make the most of anything — he opened it so that a child whose parents cannot read a homework diary could still grow up to write one for someone else.
बीस साल पहले, इस मोहल्ले में बहुत कम बच्चे स्कूल जाते थे। कमरुद्दीन खान का मानना था कि यही किसी बच्चे के भविष्य की सीमा नहीं होनी चाहिए। उन्होंने स्कूल किसी फायदे के लिए नहीं खोला — बल्कि इसलिए ताकि जिन माता-पिता को होमवर्क डायरी पढ़नी नहीं आती, उनका बच्चा बड़ा होकर किसी और के लिए वह डायरी लिख सके।
That is still the whole idea. Twelve teachers, roughly twenty children in each of their care, taught on the CBSE pattern under the UP Board, at a fee a family here can actually pay. Small enough that no child is a number. Ambitious enough that no child is told to expect less because of where they started.
आज भी यही सोच है। बारह शिक्षक, हर एक की देखरेख में करीब बीस बच्चे, यूपी बोर्ड के तहत सीबीएसई पैटर्न पर पढ़ाई, और ऐसी फीस जो यहाँ का परिवार वाकई दे सके। इतना छोटा कि कोई बच्चा सिर्फ एक नंबर न रह जाए। इतना महत्वाकांक्षी कि किसी बच्चे को यह न कहा जाए कि वह कम की उम्मीद रखे क्योंकि उसकी शुरुआत वहाँ से हुई।
We do not teach children to be realistic about their dreams.
हम बच्चों को अपने सपनों के बारे में यथार्थवादी बनना नहीं सिखाते।
A child here is often the first in their family to hold a pencil in a classroom. It would be easy — and common — to tell such a child to want something modest: a steady job, a small life, nothing that draws attention. We refuse to do that.
यहाँ का बच्चा अक्सर अपने परिवार में पहला होता है जो कक्षा में पेंसिल पकड़ता है। ऐसे बच्चे को कुछ छोटा चाहने के लिए कहना आसान होता — एक स्थिर नौकरी, एक छोटी सी ज़िंदगी, कुछ भी जो ध्यान न खींचे। हम ऐसा नहीं करते।
We tell our students they can become doctors. Engineers. Scientists. The people who build the things everyone else uses. Not as a nice thing to say — as the actual aim of every lesson, every test, every extra hour a teacher gives. We would rather a child aim at something that looks impossible from here and get halfway, than aim at something small and get all of it.
हम अपने विद्यार्थियों से कहते हैं कि वे डॉक्टर बन सकते हैं। इंजीनियर। वैज्ञानिक। वे लोग जो वो चीज़ें बनाते हैं जिनका इस्तेमाल बाकी सब करते हैं। यह सिर्फ कहने की बात नहीं है — यही हर पाठ, हर परीक्षा, और शिक्षक के हर अतिरिक्त घंटे का असली मकसद है। हम चाहेंगे कि बच्चा किसी ऐसी चीज़ का लक्ष्य रखे जो यहाँ से नामुमकिन लगे और आधा हासिल करे, बजाय इसके कि वह कुछ छोटा चाहे और वह सब पा ले।
